Alice Kuipers has always believed that stories change the world.
Born and raised in London, England, she moved to the Canadian prairies more than twenty years ago—bringing with her a love of language and a belief that words illuminate the shadows. Since then, she has published fourteen books for children and young adults, with translations in thirty-six countries.
Her debut novel, Life on the Refrigerator Door, a tender, unforgettable story told entirely through Post-it notes, became an international bestseller and won or was longlisted for numerous prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. Her later works—The Worst Thing She Ever Did (Lost for Words in the US), 40 Things I Want to Tell You, The Death of Us, Me and Me, and the Polly Diamond series—have continued to earn acclaim for their emotional depth, lyrical style, and compassion for the complexities of growing up. Her work has been described as “for storytellers and story lovers” (Kirkus Reviews), “gorgeous, heart-ripping, important” (VOYA), and “intense and wonderful” (Bif Naked).
Her essays and short fiction have appeared on CBC, The Huffington Post, Today’s Parent, and Bristol Review of Books. Now, through her Substack newsletter, Confessions & Coffee, she shares essays on writing, creativity, and the search for flow—it’s a space where creativity, calm, and community meet.
Alongside her own writing, Alice is Head of Coaching at The Novelry, where she works with 27 bestselling brilliant authors and a team of wonderful editors to help writers around the world find their voice, their flow, and their story.
Now, in her next creative chapter, Alice is writing crime novels for adults, returning to the themes that have always defined her work—love, loss, and the way the stories we tell about our lives shape who we are.
When she’s not writing, Alice can be found walking her dog Bamboo, wrangling her children, or reading by the window, cat curled nearby.
Alice Kuipers grew up in London, England, with her head in books and her heart set on writing. In a classroom when she was eleven an assignment became a thirty-page novel about two alien species at war. From that moment, the notebook stayed open, a pen nearby, through school and into her university years.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Manchester, where she became fascinated by creativity, flow and flourishing—curiosities she carried into her MA in Creative Writing and into her writing practice. During her studies she wrote novel after novel, many unpublished, honing her craft in the bookshop where she had a part-time job and during early mornings, with coffee. Life on the Refrigerator Door, was the seventh book she’d written—a tender story told entirely in Post-it notes between a mother and daughter.
When it was published in 2007, the book became an international success, selling in thirty-six countries and earning multiple awards and shortlistings, including the Carnegie Medal. It was the start of a life defined by story and the steady, joyful discipline of writing. From then on, life unfolded in a rhythm of book–baby–book–baby, as she built a career amid the chaos of motherhood.
Today, Alice lives in Saskatoon, Canada with her partner, author Yann Martel, their four children, their dog Bamboo and cat Merlin. She continues to write, coach, teach and invite others into the space where story becomes a way of being.
